As of July 1, the European Health Insurance Card is also valid in Croatia

On July 1, Croatia becomes a member state of the European Union and in relation to that, persons insured by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund are entitled to medical care under the terms and conditions equalled to those of insured Croatians, provided that they present a valid European Health Insurance Card.

All insured people in Estonia can apply for the European Health Insurance Card. For up to 19-year-old people the card will be issued for 5 years, for those above 19, the card will be issued for 1 year. The card can be obtained free of charge. Read more about the card application process on the website of the Health Insurance Fund.   However, it must be kept in mind that medical care is not completely fee of charge with the European Health Insurance Card — a card holder must still pay the patient's own share (visitation fee, in-patient fee, etc.) according to the price list of the country providing the medical help. The patient's own share will not be remunerated to the person. Neither do the benefits of the card cover transport services between the countries. Therefore, the Health Insurance Fund also advises entering into a travel insurance policy with a private insurance company, as a policy generally covers the patient's own fees and transport between countries.   More information about medical care in the European Union can be found on our website.
