Falling ill abroad

In the event of falling ill abroad, the employee must apply to a foreign medical institution for the confirmation of temporary incapacity for work.

The Health Insurance Fund pays the benefit for temporary incapacity for work to a person insured in Estonia based on a document issued by a foreign doctor certifying the illness which contains the following information:

  • the date of birth, first name, and last name of the insured person;
  • in the case of providing care for a person, the date of birth, first name, and last name of the person receiving care;
  • the cause of the illness;
  • the start and end date of the leave (dd/mm/yyyy);
  • the name of the medical institution and doctor.

The document certifying illness or injury issued by a foreign doctor must be submitted to the employer, who must attach the employer’s certificate and forward the data to the Health Insurance Fund.

If requested by the Health Insurance Fund, the certificate issued by a foreign doctor must be accompanied by a sworn translation into Estonian. The cost of translating the certificate is borne by the insured person.
